Ineffably elegant, yet rooted deeply in nature. Fierce and free, but delicate and fleeting. All Kita wines remind me of birds, but when I opened this 2015 Spe’y Camp 4 Vineyard Red (a #sample ) I was particularly struck by its thrilling, dazzling, but completely down to earth beauty.
A blend of Grenache, Carignane and Syrah, she’s fresh and bright as a daisy, but poised, beautiful and tense as a soprano unleashing an aria. There’s red plum, blackberries, rose petals, pomegranate, cinnamon, black pepper, soaring away on late summer breeze. Come back and sing to me again. 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷
Kita’s winemaker Tara Gomez’s passion for the land and science drew her to winemaking. She first landed in the great Paso Robles, where she perfected her own style at J. Lohr. From there, she flew to Europe, sipping, picking and learning in Spain, France and Germany. You can taste her experience, exuberant fearlessness and love of the Old World’s ways in every sip of her decidedly bold New World wine. In 2010, the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians bought a vineyard in the Santa Barbara County AVA, and hired her to make their wine, and execute their shared vision of a wine that honors both old and new, gives the hand over to the land, and lets Mother Earth set the beat. 🍷🍷🍷🍷
Kita means “Our Valley Oak” in the Santa Ynez Chumash native language, Samala. She has spirit, she knows how to soar, but she always remembers to come home again.
