Working out way around massive crevasses on Mount Baker’s Coleman Glacier on an @alpineinstitute Alpine Ice Course. The conditions on the Coleman Glacier this year are the worst I have ever seen. Much of the lower glacier is just piles of rock. The ice is mostly gone. The upper glacier is not safely navigable. .. . . . . . . #mountbaker #alpineclimbing #glacier #crevasse #climbing #mountaineering #optoutside #goatworthy #getoutstayout #outside #whatcomcounty #mountbakernationalforest

I really miss backpacking and going for long hikes. (Dark dramatic music in the background) My plantar fasciitis has returned after years of hiatus along with newly added fat pad syndrome and Achilles tendinitis. I haven’t hiked since March 5th. MARCH 5th!!! This is too long to not be out there. But you know what!!! (Uplifting dramatic music in the background) I started to do a mile hike/walk last week, and hopefully by the end of summer, I can go decent distance!! This picture reminds me of good times during last year’s backpacking trip to Eastern Sierra. Let’s get out there again! . // You are the sky. Everything else — it's just the weather. •Pema Chödrön• ✩ Just stumbled back upon this quote. I am writing this from a place of reflection, thinking on our human condition to resist change. To feel like we are a product of circumstance. We simply are not. We are so much more. ✩ It's easy to attach to our emotions and daily changes. To feel stuck & confused. To question, "Why me?" Then later, we want the joy to last and forget to simply ENJOY it in the moment. We fear the storm that *must* be coming! Then some days it feels we are stuck in a tornado. Then sunshine again?! UGH, it can be so frustrating! ✩ Somewhere in our daily life, we lose our perspective. We fear our joy will end. We anticipate hurt, rejection, pain. We attach deeply, unhealthily to the natural, rhythmic rise and fall of life. If change is the only constant in life, then we cannot define our worth solely with the weather and seasons of our life. ✩ As the sky, our inner selves are incomprehensibly vast. Full of expansive capabilities, knowledge, and love. Our underlying identity is separate from our life events, feelings, changes, challenges, emotions. To define ourselves by life circumstances would belittle our vast humanity. ✩ These thoughts arose during a weekend in Eastern Washington with @erin.inspired where we had to execute 'Plan C' because of weather challenges. We felt like a product of some kind of game. It challenged our persistence and resilience - our ability to connect to each other and our inner selves despite the frustration, sadness, and anger. When we stepped outside our circumstance, we saw the bigger WHY. That we are human and we simply cannot control these changes. That we are so much MORE and capable of finding a little sunshine & rainbow through the stormy sky. ✩ We are not the weather that plagues or rewards us. That is all temporary. We, my friends, are the sky. ✩ 📸: @erin.inspired

Despite all the setback and challenges after an injury my body have given me this past 10mos, my spirit have not changed or feel like I’ve shied away from the dreams of scaling up a mountain to find my beach. I haven’t. I’m motivated as ever to still find my summer time to swim in new icy lakes, be it off trail or lake that i’ve been to before. I’ve been eyeing this off trail lake for a while, I’m finally going to attempt it this weekend. Wish me and @andygetsaround lots and lot of luck 🙌🏼. And return safely with amazing photos to share that this is POSSIBLE 🤙🏼 Stay tuned! #findyourbackcountry @backcountry

Today I had my preop appointment for my knee surgery in two weeks. It’s a bitter-sweet day riddled with emotions of fear and anxiety but also excitement as I prepare to go under the knife once again to have my meniscus repaired, hardware removed (a plate and 8 screws) and my MCL reconstructed. I’ll be spending another month on crutches but I’m excited to hopefully (fingers crossed 🤞 ) get rid of the painful metallic, vice grip feeling of the hardware, get full function and strength back, as well as my lateral stability (hopefully no more buckling or knee braces)! Short term pain, for long term gain 💪! I purposely chose August 1st as my surgery date, so I could have a partial summer with some hiking, hopefully some backpacking and time spent with family and friends. Unfortunately, my 3 attempts to go backpacking with friends have gotten weathered out but I’ve been able to accomplish my goal of taking my parents on two of my favorite Washington hikes with abundant wildflowers. 7 years of living in this beautiful state and I finally got to show my parents (glimpses) of Mount Rainier amid the stunning bear grass, lupine, glacier lillies and Indian paintbrush (a favorite of mine from childhood). I can’t wait to get back on two feet again and spend time in the mountains in favorite places with my favorite people. Next year is my year! But for now, let the healing, strengthening, studying, painting and connecting commence ❤️

~Desert Song~ 🎶As the sun glides over a desert landscape, it acts as a maestro conducting the grand orchestra of nature. 🎵Giving cues to a vast arrangement of mammals, birds, insects, and reptiles. 🎶All leading up to the climax of the roar of thunder, which can be heard echoing through the vast chambers and chasms of the carved sandstone. 🎵Shortly accompanied by the rush of water, near and far. As it falls to the earth and flows with the contours of rock. 🎶Only to dissipate moments later and slowly fade back into the sounds of life rejoicing for the summer storm. 🎵As the sun begins to bow over the horizon, it gladly gives the stage to the radiant moon and stars.- - Photography tip of the day: Animals can be tricky to photograph...especially when they are of the wild kind. Often they will move or turn right when you have the camera ready. So instead of getting stressed...just enjoy the moment once your camera is ready. Watch the animal (from a safe distance for you and the animal) and wait. You’ll usually have plenty of opportunities to get a great picture during an encounter. And if not, at least you got to enjoy a cool experience in nature :)

I haven’t written anything about SOB 50 miler (last Saturday), but it was a great(ish) day on the trails. (No, really, it was pretty great.) I just love it down there and if you haven’t run in Southern Oregon, I encourage you to check out the SOB races or any of the many races there throughout the year. Every time I go down there, I fall a little more in love. It’s truly spectacular terrain and scenery and the running community is top notch. In 2015, SOB was my very first 50 miler, and this year, it was my sixth and on a new course (since the previous one was impacted by fire). Despite a slightly unstable 💩 first 18 miles or so, and a rough last 2-3 miles 🤢, I ran as strong as I ever have. Funny, around mile 29-30, on a technical downhill section that is shared with the #PinetoPalm course, I was having flashbacks of last September’s 100 miler and thinking maybe I should sign up for it again! (I use “flashbacks” loosely since that’s mile ~85-87 of P2P and who knows what’s real?!) Of course, by the time I hit mile 48 and was on a grueling climb and trying not to vomit, I was thinking, why do I even run? 😂 The thing about this sport is that whatever you are feeling, good or bad, it is fleeting. So you might as well find joy in the ups and joy in knowing that the downs are temporary. Photos: (1) w/ @danioutdoors at mile 12.5 (50 miler) for me and 18 (100k) for her, where the course did a figure-8 and we accidentally timed it perfectly to run into each other — and were obviously ecstatic about it! (2) At SOB 2015, my first 50 miler!

A couple weeks ago, we did a chill hike up Mount St Helens, happy to have light packs which is rarely the case. At the summit we enjoyed views of inside a cloud and cheered when a mini hail storm started until it turned into a thunderstorm ⛈ with lightning coming out of the cloud that we were INSIDE of. I don’t think I’ve ever descended anything that fast before, but we made excellent time, back at the car before anyone had a chance to even consider hypothermia. #mountsthelens #adventureoutside #run #goatworthy

Last week I had one of those experiences I’ve dreamed about for as long as I can remember. If you spend regular time hiking the upper reaches of the Cascades in the Summer, you’ve undoubtedly heard the low, booming, almost owl-like hooting call of the Sooty Grouse. This is the tactic males use to woo females, along with the visual display of fanning out tail feathers and showing off their bright colors that stay hidden the rest of the year. Well, they usually do this from high perches in conifers, where they can be difficult to see. I’ve probably seen about 10% of the ones I’ve heard. But while hiking in Washington last week, I came across a male Sooty Grouse in full display in the open on three separate occasions! All three were amazing, but the third was the closest and most cooperative and photogenic of the birds. Here’s some pics! #sootygrouse #birding

Do you know where your snowboard comes from? Or your favourite equipment to get outside comes from? @venturesnow is hand built with locally sourced materials and powered by eco conscious energy, it's very important to me to know where my gear comes from. With Venture I know exactly where, and it was so cool to grab a board and then take it up to a mountain I can see from the shop! There not the only ones out there crushing it. Look at brands like @trappersnowboards , @chimerasnowboards / @pallassnowboards , @spline_snowboards , @priorsnow , @oliveboards , @pogoboards and many others. Support brands that do it because it's there soul passion and not because of the money, stoked I was able to visit Ventures playground, they have the goods! 📸 @ryanirvinphoto @venturesnow #weareventure #splitboardingistheanswer #coloRadbro #silverton #goldrush

Took a two night backpacking trip last weekend with some close family and friends. Today has been a super stressful day. I woke up feeling extremely uneasy about installing windows in my van. Cutting into the van hasn’t gotten easier, unfortunately. And while with the fans, there was quite a bit of wiggle room, with the windows, there’s not. . I made a mis-cut on one of the fans the other day. And while it wnded up being totally fine, my confidence with all of this took a hit. And my brain started spiraling, as per usual. . I almost decided to screw it and hire someone. I even called around to find someone. But as the day went on and my dad and I stewed over it, I started to calm down. . We can do this. We just have to slow down. Measure twice (er....50 times), cut once. Breathe. Pay attention to the details. And honestly, it’s pretty special getting to figure all of this stuff out with my dad. We may bicker over how to do things, but we’ve made a pretty awesome team with this scary stuff!♥️ . . . . . . . #vanbuild #vanlife #mtnchicks #mtnchicksdoitbetter #getoutside #adventure #darlingdirtbag #dirtbag #choosemountains #optoutside #radgirls #sheexplores #mountaingirl #goatworthy #radgirlslife #mybodycan #promaster #campervan #diy #shecan

Rainbow over the Rockies from awhile back. I have not had enough time yet this summer to spend in this incredible park. Does anyone else find it absolutely impossible to do everything they want in these short months of summer? I have been to Indian Peaks wilderness a couple times and RMNP only once so far. Hoping to go photograph mountain goats Friday am and then get back to the park before heading out of town again later next week. Feel so lucky to live so close to so much beauty that I can’t actually fit it all in. A good problem to have.

As you may have seen from my story posts during the last couple of days, I spent Sunday and Monday in the backcountry of Bruce Peninsula National Park. It had been a very long time since I’d hauled my pack and walked on trails, because since leaving Vancouver and coming back to the GTA that kind of adventuring sure isn’t as accessible. But holy 💩 it wasn’t until I was out there that I realized how much I’d missed the feeling of it all. The feeling of carrying around all my essentials on my back, the feeling of nature and complete reliance, responsibility, and gratitude for what my body is capable of. I told Matt today that out there I have less but feel the most meaning and happiness. And here in the city I have more, and long for more, and feel less meaning. It’s interesting actually. But what always plays over in my mind is my brother in law telling me about one of his last conversations with my sister and they were talking about how it really is the simple things in life that stay with you and matter the most. It reminds me everyday to keep it simple and not over complicate things. And I guess that’s why out on the trails I love it so much. It’s one foot in front of the other. The basics of simplicity. I’d love to hear if you feel the same way? Or is it just me. Love always, K . . . . . . . #womenwhohike #mountaingirls #alpinebabes #choosemountains #explorecanada #themountainsarecalling #herpnwlife #thatpnwlife #takeahike #mountaintop #pnwphotographer #adventuretime #optoutside #liveoutdoors #theoutbound #hikebc #backpackerlife #ourcamplife #forgeyourownpath #awakethesoul #getoutstayout #explorebc #sheisnotlost #goatworthy #takemoreadventures #wildernesstones #wildernessculture #vancouverisawesome #neverstopexploring #travelstoke

One of the things I love about hiking is that it forces me to slow down and appreciate my surroundings. Instead of being wrapped up in endless deadlines, answering emails, or worrying about trivial things I am given the opportunity to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of society and simply appreciate the details around me and moments as they unfold. ✨ These are some of my favorite details and moments from Alaska: 1. The moon setting during blue hour on our final night. 2. The sun illuminating the wildflower petals. 3. A creek shining in a shadowy valley at sunset. 4. The warm alpenglow slowly painting the mountain orange at daybreak.
