Dog Guardian of the Week 🐕
Asanda Mohapi and Puppy have been attending the Friday afternoon dog training classes at Funda Nenja since the beginning of the year. Fourteen year old Asanda said he named his dog Puppy because “it is a good name for a dog… Puppy likes his name… he is a puppy even though he is big now”. Indeed, Puppy is an absolute gentle giant, he is super sweet, friendly and a really big softie. 🐾
Asanda lives next door to one of our long-term attendees, Slindokuhle Ngubane and his dear little dog, Mercy. Sadly Asanda lost both his parents last year and now lives with his aged grandmother. Asanda has been desperate to get a dog, but unfortunately his house is not fenced and his grandmother cannot afford a dog. However, Slindokuhle’s mother, Grace, kindly agreed to get a dog for Asana. “I told him I would buy him a dog, the dog can live here with us at our house and be a friend for Mercy and then Asana can visit the dog all the time”. 🐕
Grace has unofficially adopted both Asana and his grandmother. “The grandmother is not well, she is too old to look after a young boy so I take her food every day and Asana is like my other boy. I have three boys, so it is no problem to have another one”. She says that “we all love Puppy, he is a big puppy, but he loves everyone and he is a very good friend for Asana”. Indeed, Asana says that the best thing about Puppy is that “he loves me... and he understands me”. 🐾
Asana says that “Puppy likes to play with the ball. He can catch the ball in his mouth and he also runs after the ball and brings it back to me to throw again… but only for a short time, then he gets tired and likes to lie down and have a small sleep”. He says that “I love playing with Puppy every day, he makes me so happy… he always makes me smile and laugh”. 🐕
We are so delighted that Asana and Puppy have each other, and that they both have Grace and her lovely family to look after them.
