Female Figureheads & Bare Breasts
This gold-painted figurehead (Maritime Museum Greenwich London) is from the steam yacht Sunbeam which was owned by British politician Thomas Brassey (1836-1918)
Like many female figureheads, the torso of this young angelic girl is bare.
But in this case her little chest is covered by her crossed arms, hiding the promise of womanhood which never would be and given a pair of wings instead ;
This figurehead is an ode to Brassey’s young daughter, Constance Alberta, whose nickname was Sunbeam. Constance died of scarlet fever aged just four in 1873.
Her fathers 531-ton luxury yacht, launched the following year, commemorated her.
In 1876 the Brassey family embarked on an 11-month voyage around the world in Sunbeam, possibly the first circumnavigation by a private yacht.
What a wonderfully poetic way of commemorating a daughter; giving her wings and the endless freedom of the seas... #bbookproject #letstalkbreast #curiositycures #breastcancerawareness #figureheads #femalefigureheads #sunbeam #steamyachtsunbeam #maritimemuseumgreenwich
